Statement by the IIN-OAS regarding the earthquake in Colombia

Statement by the Inter-American Children’s Institute regarding the earthquake in Colombia

Our Solidarity with the Children and Adolescents of Colombia

It is with deep concern and empathy that we stand with the people of Colombia in the wake of the powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck on August 10, with its epicenter in San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, and was felt in various regions of the country.

Our first thoughts are with the children and adolescents, their families, and communities—especially those facing these uncertain times and the populations in the departments where Colombian authorities are currently assessing potential impacts.

In emergency situations, protecting children and adolescents’ means providing safety and care, preserving family and community ties, ensuring access to essential services, and offering spaces where children and adolescents can feel protected, supported, and heard.

We especially recall that, even in the most difficult moments, the rights of children and adolescents are not suspended. Their best interests must be primary consideration in every decision and at every stage of the response, assistance, and recovery.

We at the IIN-OAS express our solidarity with Colombia and recognize the commitment of those—from institutions, emergency response teams, communities, and families themselves—who are working to protect lives and support those who need it most.

Today, Colombia needs our support and solidarity. From across the Americas, we renew our call to work together, always placing children and adolescents at the center of our actions.

To the children and adolescents of Colombia and their families: the Americas stand with you.
