Day of General Discussion 2018 «Protecting and Empowering Children as Human Rights Defenders»

On Friday September 28 will be held during the 79th session of the Committee on the Rights of the Child on the Day of General Discussion 2018.

In commemoration of the «Declaration on Human Rights Defenders» (1998), this year the central theme will be «Protecting and empowering Children as Human Rights Defenders,» and its purpose is that their voices be central in all aspects of the preparations, during and after the Day.

Perhaps most importantly, the Declaration is addressed not just to States and to human rights defenders, but to everyone. It tells us that we all have a role to fulfil as human rights defenders and emphasizes that there is a global human rights movement that involves us all.

The Child Rights Connect (CRC) proposed the creation of an Advisory Team for children, and there were 41 requests from children around the world, so CRC carried out a process to ensure that the selection was fair and equitable.

Currently 20 children’s from: Canada, Uganda, Argentina, Benin, Scotland, Senegal, Mexico, Zambia, Central African Republic, Norway, Kenya, Greece, Moldova, El Salvador, United States, Pakistan, Jordan, Ecuador and India, make up the Advisory Team.

Three adolescent members of the Network of Correspondents for Children and Adolescents (CORIA) of the IINOEA will participate in the Day of the General DIiscussion 2018, they are: Kurt Ottosen (Argentina), Akanska Sharma and Amy Spearman (Canada).

Place: Palace of Nations, Room XVII 8-14 Avenue de la Paix 1211 Geneva, Switzerland.
