Workshop for the Implementation of the Operating Protocol for Ombudsmen for Children

Workshop for the Implementation of the Operating Protocol for Ombudsmen for Children

With the purpose of disseminating the Operating Protocol for Ombudsmen for Children and developing a route sheet for its implementation within the People´s Ombudsman Office in Paraguay, the IIN is holding a technical assistance workshop in the city of Asunción on 3 and 4 November, with the participation of 25 officials from that Office.

This is the last of a cycle of workshops carried out within the context of the project for the Promotion and Support for the Development of Ombudsman Offices for Children, which the IIN is developing with funds from the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID). Before Paraguay, the workshop was held in the states of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Peru and Panama.

National human rights institutions and ombudsmen or advocates for child rights are key elements in the promotion of the application of international treaties. Aware of this, during the Twentieth Pan American Child Congress, held in September 2009 in Lima, Peru, the IIN organized a discussion panel entitled Independent Monitoring of Child Rights and Ombudsman Offices, whose recommendations were included in the final unified resolution CPNNA/RES. 1 (XX-09) arising from the Twentieth Congress.

Amongst the recommendations made by the discussion panel was that of providing support for regional and international processes and mechanisms involving exchange, incorporation and coordination between Ombudsman Offices for Children, bearing in mind that matters related to child rights are not restricted by national boundaries and that it is increasingly necessary to devise regional and international answers.
