María Julia Garcete new general director of the IIN

 

 

On June 7, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, announced the decision to appoint María Julia Garcete, from Paraguay, as the new director general of the Inter-American Institute for Children and Adolescents (IIN), who began his duties on Monday, July 3.

María Julia Garcete is a social worker and has worked in the promotion of the rights of children and adolescents for more than 20 years from the public sector and non-governmental organizations.

At the time of running as a candidate for the General Directorate of the IIN-OAS, she held functions as Head of the Department of Comprehensive Development of Boys and Girls in the Ministry of Children and Adolescents of Paraguay (MINNA); with a previous path traveled in said institution, in which he maintained a link with the IIN-OAS as a technical liaison for 10 years.

Within the work proposal for his candidacy, Garcete emphasized innovation as axes, with an Observatory of Public Policies for children and adolescents as a platform to develop said pillar; and inclusion, from the articulation and work in networks that promote an exchange in the approach of children who, due to their condition, experience barriers to their participation.

In his candidacy, he also highlighted the promotion, protection, and participation as a support for the achievements made regarding technical assistance to states, study of regulatory frameworks, exchange of practices, generation and monitoring of networks of technical links, as well as the production of knowledge from the Inter-American Training Program and the development of content and communication strategies.

In her first working meeting with the IIN-OAS technicians, the new director shared about the current lines of work and highlighted the imprint that the organization has had in the promotion and protection of the rights of children and adolescents, and the need to strengthen the link with other organizations that guarantee rights. In turn, he emphasized the potential of the institution to contribute to the continent.
