Guatemala: The Institution of Early Childhood Public Policy and its System of Indicators

 

On Friday, 25 November, the ceremony for the institution of early childhood public policy and its system of indicators was held at the National Palace of Culture. The event was presided over by the President of the Republic, Álvaro Colom, and attended by ministers, vice-ministers, secretaries of State, civil servants and members of the diplomatic corps, as well as by the Director General of the IIN, Mrs. Marí­a Dolores Aguilar Marmolejo.

 

The Director General of the IIN highlighted the importance for the region and for the country of this kind of public policy and expressed her gratitude to the government of Guatemala for relying on the IIN to provide technical assistance, and to the CIDA for funding this effort. She also offered her support to the new authorities. The Secretary of SBS, Mrs. Silvia Palomo, also participated and drew attention to the framework within which this policy is contained. The policy itself was presented by the IIN-CIDA National Project Coordinator, Mr. Rubén Chavén.

 

Lastly, the President of the Republic of Guatemala emphasized the significance for the development of children of carrying out measurements by means of progress indicators, as well as the fact that it is important for the country to have legal and public policy instruments with which to guarantee children rights.
