Rapporteurs from the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child visited the IIN

This week we were pleased to receive at the IIN headquarters a visit by members of the Committee on the Rights of the Child of the United Nations. Our team had the opportunity to exchange views with Sara Oviedo, Vice President and Jorge Cardona Llorens; both representations expressed their willingness to form a partnership with the IIN and to conduct joint activities in favor of child rights.

In her intervention, Sara Oviedo highlighted the importance of strengthening our ties and working together to submit recommendations to states parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, arguing that it is necessary that States continue to act on recommendations. For his part, the specialist in international law, Jorge Cardona, said it is necessary to accept the paradigm shift and recognize children as subjects of rights that need to be observed.

The meeting agreed that it is necessary to contribute to a cultural debate and offer alternative arrangements for the care of children and the exercise of parental authority by adults. It was also noted that very few states in the region have acceded to the Third Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child to establish a communication procedure, which children and adolescents can follow in order to denounce situations that violate their rights.

The meeting reached several agreements which will facilitate, for each of the two institutions, continued strengthening of our technical exchanges and mutual contributions. This synergy between the Committee and the IIN shows the interest of both institutions in creating and developing projects that guarantee the rights of Children and Adolescents.
