IIN / OAS Institutional Campaign «The Right of the Child to the Family», based on the CIDH report on deinstitutionalization

The IIN, as part of its Action Plan 2015-2019, committed efforts in the creation and dissemination of a communication campaign that includes the main contents present in the report «The right of the child to the family. Alternative care. Ending the institutionalization in the Americas», prepared by the CIDH and UNICEF.

This campaign arises on the idea of a communication for the social development, which seeks to promote the culture of rights and to enhance the capacities every actor about the situation of institutionalized children in the region, the challenges, positive experiences and opportunities for change.

As a way to protect and guarantee the rights of children without parental care, this communication campaign is an opportunity to position and make visible the theme of the right of the children to the family, and the commitment to raise awareness about Deinstitutionalization1 and the Alternative Care2 , and at the same time, to promote the reflection and discussion of these issues in the States of the region.

The IIN has accumulated technical capacity in this line, developing among other actions documents such as: «Children and their Rights to a Family», «Children and their Right in Family» and «Guidelines on parenting capacity”, which includes the importance that children, especially in early childhood, be part of a family that guarantees their integral development.

The campaign will be broadcast through our facebook and twitter during the month of August.

1 We understand deinstitutionalization as the measure that seeks to reduce the use of the foster care model in residential institutions that do not satisfy the preservation and restitution of children’s rights.

2 We are referring to promoting alternative ways of caring for children and adolescents in a family environment or with similar dynamics that allow individualized attention in accordance with the rights of the children.
